This year, Saffron Walden Museum, nestled in the breathtaking expanse of Northwest Essex, celebrates its 190th birthday. Since opening on the 12th of May 1835, within a purpose-built facility, the museum has become one of the oldest of its kind in the country. Focused initially on Natural History and World Cultures, the museum has flourished and expanded—from the intricate tales of agriculture to the vibrant narratives of cultural heritage, from the elegance of wood to the allure of gold. Saffron Walden Museum is a treasure trove filled with wonders from across the globe.
To commemorate this milestone, the Saffron Walden Museum invites our vibrant local community, community groups, academics, and experts to select their very own “Wonder” for the upcoming exhibition, “WONDERS: 190 YEARS OF THE SAFFRON WALDEN MUSEUM,” which opens on 10 May 2025.
