Research

The museum offers a range of behind-the-scenes services, to help you discover more about our collections and about north-west Essex.

Enquiries

Do you have a question about an object in our collections? Are you researching the history of your family or a local business, building or society? Or have you seen something on display in the museum and you simply want to know more? Our curatorial staff are here to help!

Contact us for more information.

Research Visits

Only approximately 10% of our rich and varied collections are on display in the museum – the rest is kept and cared for in our stores. If you would like to view objects in our stored collections, you can contact us to make an appointment. Your appointment may take place at the museum or at our purpose-built museum store, also located in Saffron Walden.

Object Identification

Bring in your local ‘finds’ and we can help you identify them. You can leave objects with our curatorial staff for about two-four weeks and we will examine and research them for you. Please note that we are unable to give valuations for objects.

For archaeological finds, we can also put you in touch with the Finds Liaison Officer for Essex for reporting potential treasure finds (as required by the Treasure Act) or for voluntary recording of other finds under the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
